What to look for in motor oil:
When choosing a motor oil, it’s critical for the health of your engine to choose the right formula for your gasoline, propane, or diesel engine. For many operators living in regions with extreme temperatures, thermal stability is of the utmost importance. For others, wear protection is the most important factor – rust and bearing corrosion, oxidation resistance and enhanced soot control take priority. No matter which motor oil you choose, when you buy from Safety-Kleen, you’ll know that our products help to optimize engine output, improve fuel economy, and prolong the life of the engine. From OW-20 in a Scion engine all the way up to 15W-40 in a Cummins, we stand behind our products and the performance they offer.

How do you choose the right motor oil?
The table below outlines the differences between our motor oils. If in doubt, consult your equipment dealer or OEM for the best product to protect your engine.
0W-20 Motor Oil:
-Viscosity: Extremely low at both cold and operating temperatures.
-Usage: Ideal for cold climates and modern engines designed for maximum fuel efficiency.
-Benefits: Excellent fuel economy and fast lubrication at startup.
5W-20 Motor Oil:
-Viscosity: Low viscosity at cold temperatures, moderate at operating temperatures.
- Usage: Common in many modern engines, particularly in cars that require a balance of fuel efficiency and protection.
- Benefits: Good fuel economy and reliable cold-start performance.
5W-30 Motor Oil:
- Viscosity: Low viscosity at cold temperatures, thicker at operating temperatures compared to 5W-20.
- Usage: Suitable for a wide range of vehicles, providing a balance of performance and protection.
- Benefits: Versatile oil that works well in both cold and hot conditions, protecting against wear and tear.
5W-40 Motor Oil:
- Viscosity: Low viscosity at cold temperatures, significantly thicker at operating temperatures.
- Usage: Often used in high-performance or heavy-duty engines that require additional protection.
- Benefits: Provides excellent protection under high-stress conditions and extreme temperatures.
10W-30 Motor Oil:
- Viscosity: Thicker than 5W oils at cold temperatures, moderate at operating temperatures.
- Usage: Suitable for older engines or those in warmer climates.
- Benefits: Provides better protection in warm temperatures, reducing oil consumption in older engines.
15W-40 Motor Oil:
- Viscosity: Thick at cold temperatures, thicker at operating temperatures.
- Usage: Typically used in diesel engines or heavy-duty applications.
- Benefits: Excellent protection in high-temperature, high-load conditions, ideal for heavy machinery and trucks.
What’s the difference between synthetic blend and full synthetic motor oil?
Choosing between synthetic blend and full synthetic motor oil depends on the specific needs of the machinery, the operating conditions, and the budget.
Full Synthetic Motor Oil is made entirely from synthetic base oils, with no conventional oil mixed in. It’s designed to provide the highest level of performance and protection and offers superior resistance to high temperatures and thermal breakdown, excellent cold-weather performance, reduced engine wear, and the best overall protection against deposits and sludge. It also maintains its viscosity better over a wider range of temperatures. Full synthetic motor oil is ideal for heavy machinery operating under extreme conditions, such as very high or low temperatures, heavy loads, or extended periods of operation. It is especially beneficial for newer, high-performance engines that demand the best protection and performance.
Synthetic Blend Motor Oil is a mixture of conventional (mineral) oil and synthetic base oils. It combines the benefits of synthetic oils with the cost-effectiveness of conventional oils. Typically, it contains 30% or less synthetic oil and offers better protection and performance than conventional oil, particularly in extreme temperatures and under heavy loads. It reduces engine wear, improves fuel efficiency, and provides better protection against oxidation and thermal breakdown compared to conventional oils. Synthetic Blend Motor Oil is suitable for those who need better performance and protection than conventional oil, such as operators of heavy machinery that work under moderate to severe conditions but are looking to save on costs.
What’s the difference between natural gas engine oil and heavy-duty diesel engine oil?
Natural gas engine oil provides superior protection and is specifically engineered to provide protection for trucks and buses using compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied natural gas (LNG). Many of our customers trust their Blue Bird buses, their John Deere tractors, and their Volvo trucks to our 15W-40 natural gas engine oil. Conversely, our 15W-40 heavy duty diesel engine oil is made for the needs of diesel engines, offering reduced oxidative thickening, excellent cleanliness and enhanced soot control. Many Mack drivers, Detroit Diesel drivers and API drivers look to our motor oil for peak performance.
How do I find the best synthetic blend oil?
Safety-Kleen offers a wide variety of synthetic blend oils – in several different sizes. You might choose a case of 5W-40 1-quart bottles to test the oil on your equipment, and then later purchase a 55-gallon drum for your fleet.
How do I find the best full synthetic oil?
Safety-Kleen offers high-quality, top-performance full synthetic oil – by the case of 1-gallon bottles, by 5-gallon pail and by 55-gallon drum.
How do I find motor oil that meets OEM requirements?
The best Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) like Caterpillar, Volvo, Allison, Kubota, Mercedes-Benz, Mack, Ford, and others trust Safety-Kleen’s top-performance motor oils for high viscosity and long-lasting protection. Our full synthetic oil, synthetic blend, high mileage synthetic blend, heavy duty diesel engine oil and natural gas engine oil meets or exceeds the standards and guidelines set in place by OEMs as well as many other societies and institutes concerned with safety and performance. Type your OEM into the search to find the motor oils, gear oils, driveline fluids and hydraulic fluids suitable for your machinery.
